The Wareham - American Legion Post #220 Baseball Program player registration is now open via e-mail. Post #220 Baseball competition in 2013 is open to high school and college players born on or after January 1, 1994 who live in Wareham, Marion, Mattapoisett, Rochester, parts of Buzzards Bay, and those who attend; Wareham High School, Old Rochester Regional High School, or Tabor Academy.

Post #220 10, Whitman 2 (1-0) - The Wareham Legion Post #220 Baseball Program opened the 2012 season w/ a home win. Matt Beatty (Old Rochester) tossed a complete game; 10 strikeout effort. Beatty allowed four hits and two walks on the night, while giving up only two earned runs to Whitman. Third baseman Ryan Steek (Upper Cape) had an outstanding start to the summer by going 3-for-3 w/ two runs scored and an RBI. Davarn Nova (Coyle and Cassidy) enjoyed a 2-for-4 game that included 3 RBI’s. Shortstop Jimmy Gamache (Tabor) went 2-for-4 w/ two runs scored, while Billy Peterson (Wareham) went 1-for-2 w/ an RBI and a stolen base. Catcher Zach Angelo (Tabor) and center fielder Sean Conway (Wareham) each went 1-for-3 w/ a run scored. Right fielder PJ Poulin (Old Rochester) collected his first American Legion hit, going 1-for-3 w/ one run scored.

Post #220 5, Bridgewater 4 (2-0) – Post #220 was able to fend off Bridgewater’s late charge in the top of the seventh inning after holding a 5-0 lead. Hadley Stone (Taft) pitched six shut-out innings, while giving up three hits and three walks with one strikeout. Zack Kirby (Old Rochester/Framingham State) ultimately earned the save in the seventh by getting the final three outs to secure the win. Sean Griffith (Bourne) was 2-for-3 w/ one run scored and two RBI’s. In the bottom of the sixth inning, infielder Austin Salkind (Old Rochester) collected his first American Legion hit in his only at bat and scored the eventual game winning run on a sacrifice fly by Ian Searles (Wareham). Brett Labonte(Wareham) played well defensively in left field and also collected his first American Legion hit by going 2-for-2 on the night.

Post #220 6, Rockland 4 (3-0)Ian Searles (Wareham) picked up his first win on the mound this summer against a tough Rockland lineup. Searles allowed eight hits and four walks, while striking out ten; in six innings of work. Zack Kirby (Old Rochester/Framingham State) earned his second consecutive save after coming in w/ the bases loaded and nobody out in the seventh inning. To preserve the victory; Post #220 was able to get out of the jam by turning an incredible game ending triple play on a line out to shortstop and forcing out the runners at second and first respectively. Jimmy Gamache (Tabor) and Billy Peterson (Wareham) went 1-for-3, with each scoring a run. Brett Labonte (Wareham) and Ryan Steek (Upper Cape) went 1-for-2, with each scoring a run. Austin Salkind (Old Rochester) added a double, while Sean Conway (Wareham) finished the night by going 2-for-3 w/ one run scored and two RBI’s.

Brockton 2, Post #220 1 (3-1) – Post #220 battles, but comes up short in extra innings versus Brockton Post #35 to drop their first game of the summer. In a great pitching performance, Matt Beatty (Old Rochester) worked all nine innings and deserved a better fate. Beatty allowed only five hits throughout the night and collected eight strikeouts along the way; moving his ERA to a miniscule 1.31 in his two starts. Offensively, Wiley Knight (Tabor) went 2-for-3, collecting his first American Legion hit in the bottom of the fifth inning. Ryan Steek (Upper Cape) produced the only run for Post #220 w/ a two out RBI single during the same inning of play to tie the game. After allowing a run in the top of the ninth inning, Post #220 left a runner on base by hitting into a fielder’s choice to end the game.

Post #220 11, Hawkeye 1 (4-1) Zack Kirby (Old Rochester/Framingham State) earned his first win of the summer by tossing a complete game on the campus of Bridgewater State. Kirby allowed only one earned run on three hits w/ six strikeouts and didn’t walk a batter. Tyler Horton (Wareham) and Jimmy Gamache (Tabor) went 2-for-3 w/ an RBI. Austin Salkind (Old Rochester) went 1-for-1 w/ an RBI single. Billy Peterson (Wareham) scored two runs and added an RBI double. Hadley Stone (Taft) went 2-for-4 w/ a double and a run scored. Zach Angelo (Tabor) went 1-for-3 w/ an RBI double, while Sean Conway (Wareham) finished 2-for-3 w/ two runs scored and two RBI’s.

Plymouth 5, Post #220 2 (4-2) Post #220 was held to five hits on the night and was only able to push across two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Billy Peterson (Wareham) went 2-for-3 w/ a run scored and a stolen base, while Jimmy Gamache (Tabor) and Sean Griffith (Bourne) were 1-for-3 w/ each collecting an RBI. Wiley Knight(Tabor) added the only other base hit. Hadley Stone (Taft) took the complete game loss in allowing only four earned runs on six hits, four walks and four strikeouts.

Post #220 13, Orleans 0 (5-2) Bouncing back from a loss, Post #220 pounded out thirteen hits, including Jimmy Gamache’s (Tabor) towering home run deep into the woods at Nauset High School. Gamache had five RBI’s on the day and was a triple away from hitting for the cycle. Chris Carando (Old Rochester) collected his first American Legion hit that produced two RBI’s in the fourth inning. Ryan Steek (Upper Cape), Austin Salkind(Old Rochester) and Sean Griffith (Bourne) all had two hits apiece, w/ Steek connecting on a triple and scoring two runs. Ian Searles(Wareham) picked up his second win of the summer by tossing a one-hitter in four innings of play. Davarn Nova (Coyle and Cassidy)completed the shutout by not allowing a hit and picking up one strikeout along the way.

Post #220 1, Kingston 0 (6-2) Fresh off his last great pitching performance, Matt Beatty (Old Rochester) picked up right where he left off. After taking a no-hitter into the final inning, Beatty gave up two hits in the seventh inning and was able to get out of a jam by leaving two base runners in scoring position and ending the game w/ a strikeout. Brett Labonte(Wareham), Billy Peterson (Wareham) and Davarn Nova (Coyle and Cassidy) each collected a hit, while Sean Conway (Wareham) added a triple and scored the only run. Jimmy Gamache (Tabor) connected on a two strike hit in the third inning that allowed Conway to score the eventual winning run.

Pembroke 6, Post #220 2 (6-3) After trailing by three runs at the end of the first inning, Post #220 could never bounce back. Hadley Stone (Taft) allowed five earned runs in four innings of work, and Sean Conway (Wareham) pitched two scoreless innings in his first relief appearance of the summer. Offensively, Post #220 was only able to generate six hits on the night. Conway was 2-for-3 w/ a run scored, while Sean Griffith (Bourne), Wiley Knight (Tabor), Davarn Nova (Coyle and Cassidy) and Billy Peterson (Wareham) each collected a hit.

Barnstable 6, Post #220 0 (6-4) For the first time this summer, Post #220 drops two games in a row. Barnstable jumped out to 1-0 lead prior to a thirty minute rain delay w/ one out in the bottom of the third inning. When play resumed, Ian Searles (Wareham) was able to pitch out of a bases loaded jam, by striking out the next two batters he faced. Unfortunately, Post #220 could only produce four hits on the night and wasn’t able to push any runs across. Sean Conway (Wareham), Tyler Horton(Wareham), Billy Peterson (Wareham) and Austin Salkind (Old Rochester) each finished w/ one hit. Searles ultimately threw five hard innings; surrendering four earned runs on five hits, while collecting nine strikeouts along the way.

Post #220 4, Middleboro 3 (7-4) Matt Beatty (Old Rochester) picked up his third win of the summer by throwing a complete game victory in Middleboro. Beatty allowed just five hits and collected three strikeouts along the way. Jimmy Gamache (Tabor) led the offensive charge by going 3-for-3 w/ an RBI and one run scored, while Davarn Nova (Coyle and Cassidy) came up w/ a big two out bases clearing double in the top of the third inning. Tyler Horton (Wareham) went 1-for-2, while Zach Angelo(Tabor), Chris Carando (Old Rochester) and Ryan Steek (Upper Cape) each finished w/ a base hit and one run scored on the night.

Post #220 1, Duxbury 0 (8-4) Zack Kirby (Old Rochester/Framingham State) picked up his second win w/ another complete game gem. Kirby struck out seven and allowed only four hits and one walk. Billy Peterson (Wareham) went 2-for-3 w/ a triple and one run scored. Jimmy Gamache (Tabor) had an RBI base hit in the third inning that proved to be enough, while Sean Griffith (Bourne), Wiley Knight (Tabor), Brett Labonte (Wareham) and Austin Salkind(Old Rochester) each finished w/ one hit.

Post #220 10, Sandwich 0 (9-4) Ian Searles (Wareham)was able to pitch through the heat and humidity; on his way to a seventeen strikeout complete game performance. Completely dominant from the start to finish, Searles allowed only two hits and four walks on the afternoon. Offensively, Sean Griffith (Bourne), Billy Peterson(Wareham) and Ryan Steek (Upper Cape) all had two hits apiece. Zach Angelo(Tabor), Tyler Horton (Wareham), Brett Labonte (Wareham), Davarn Nova (Coyle and Cassidy) and PJ Poulin (Old Rochester) each finished w/ one hit, while Angelo, Nova and Poulin delivered RBI base hits along the way.

WEEK #5 -

Hingham 8, Post #220 6 (9-5) Although out-hitting visiting Hingham thirteen to ten, Post #220 could not overcome a six run deficit after the first inning of play at Spillane Field. Pitcher Matt Beatty (Old Rochester) and his teammates took a tough loss after battling the remainder of the game to give Post #220 a chance to crawl back, but came up short in the end by stranding the tying runners on base in the final frame. Davarn Nova(Coyle and Cassidy) hit his first home run in the fourth inning to bring Post #220 within two runs and finished 2-for-3 w/ a walk and three RBI’s. Billy Peterson(Wareham) went 2-for-4 w/ an RBI triple, while Jimmy Gamache (Tabor), Tyler Horton (Wareham), and freshman Wiley Knight (Tabor) each had two hits as well. Sean Griffith (Bourne), Brett Labonte (Wareham) and yet another freshman, Austin Salkind (Old Rochester) each finished w/ one hit.

Post #220 7, Whitman 2 (10-5) Hadley Stone (Taft) tossed five solid innings to lead Post #220 to their tenth win of the summer. Stone allowed only one earned run and scattered three hits on the day. Davarn Nova (Coyle and Cassidy) and Ian Gray (Old Rochester) would combine to close out the game in the final two innings w/ out allowing a run. Offensively,Jimmy Gamache (Tabor), Tyler Horton (Wareham), Wiley Knight (Tabor) and Ryan Steek (Upper Cape) had two hits, while Chris Carando (Old Rochester)delivered a key base hit that pushed across two runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Post #220 13, Orleans 3 (11-5) Zack Kirby (Old Rochester/Framingham State) earned his third win of the summer w/ yet another complete game performance. Kirby scattered eight hits and allowed only one earned run, while collecting six strike outs on the night. With the help of a season high; fifteen hits, Post #220 put the contest out of reach by scoring seven runs in the sixth inning to close out the game. Billy Peterson (Wareham) went 3-for-3 w/ two walks and four runs scored. Jimmy Gamache (Tabor) went 3-for-4 w/ three RBI’s and Sean Conway (Wareham) went 2-for-4 w/ two RBI’s and one run scored. The big blast that provided some breathing room was Brett Labonte’s(Wareham) long home runin the fifth inning. Labonte finished the night by going 2-for-4 w/ four RBI’s, while Chris Carando (Old Rochester), Tyler Horton (Wareham), Wiley Knight (Tabor), Austin Salkind (Old Rochester) and Ryan Steek (Upper Cape) each had a hit.

Post #220 6, Marshfield 4 (12-5) Ian Searles (Wareham)earned his fourth win of the summer, as he fought through five plus innings of work against a tough Marshfield lineup. Searles scattered seven hits and collected seven strikeouts w/ three walks on the day. Davarn Nova (Coyle and Cassidy) earned his third save; as he came into the game w/ two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the six inning and struck out the clean-up batter to get out of the jam. Offensively, Jimmy Gamache (Tabor) went 3-for-3 w/ two RBI’s and Brett Labonte(Wareham) went 2-for-4 w/ one RBI. Sean Griffith (Bourne) had an RBI double in the third inning and scored two runs on the day, while Ryan Steek (Upper Cape) went 1-for-3 w/ two runs scored. Billy Peterson (Wareham) and Austin Salkind (Old Rochester) each added a hit w/ Salkind coming up w/ a big two out RBI in the top of the seventh inning.

WEEK #6 -

Post #220 2, Bridgewater 0 (13-5) – The Post #220 baseball program has reached a program high in wins (over a five year stretch), by collecting their thirteenth regular season victory in Bridgewater.Matt Beatty (Old Rochester) picked up his fourth win by throwing a complete game shutout. Beatty allowed only four hits against a tough hitting line-up and at one point, didn’t give up a hit to nineteen batters in a row. Sean Griffith’s (Bourne) base hit that scored Wiley Knight (Tabor) and Ryan Steek (Upper Cape) in the top of the first inning would prove to be enough. Griffith, Knight, Steek, Sean Conway (Wareham) and Austin Salkind(Old Rochester) each finished the game w/ two hits apiece.

Post #220 13, Middleboro 5 (14-5) Sean Conway (Wareham) made his first start on the mound this summer and he showed he was ready for the task by tossing four shutout innings, while allowing only one hit and collecting three strike outs along the way. Ian Gray(Old Rochester) threw two innings of relief and allowed three hits and three walks, while striking out four batters. Davarn Nova (Coyle and Cassidy) came in to finish the game in the final frame and didn’t allow a hit, while collecting one strikeout. On the offensive side, Jimmy Gamache (Tabor) went 3-for-3 w/ five RBI’s and three runs scored on the night. Also, Ryan Steek (Upper Cape) scored three runs and Ian Searles (Wareham) belted an RBI triple in the first inning. Austin Salkind (Old Rochester) went 2-for-2, whileChris Carando (Old Rochester), Sean Griffith (Bourne) and Tyler Horton (Wareham) each finished w/ a hit.

Post #220 1, Hanover 0 (15-5) GAME HIGHLIGHTS - Forfeit Hanover

Post #220 4, Marshfield 3 (16-5) In walk-off fashion, Sean Griffith’s (Bourne) two out and two strike hit propelled Post #220 to an exciting win in their final home regular season game. After allowing Marshfield to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning, Post #220 loaded the bases w/ nobody out in the bottom half of the inning. After two quick outs, Griffith launched the game winning hit to the edge of the warning track in center field, scoring Austin Salkind (Old Rochester) for the dramatic ending. Billy Peterson (Wareham) went 2-for-4 w/ a run scored, while Chris Carando (Old Rochester), Sean Conway (Wareham) and Brett Labonte (Wareham) each finished w/ a hit. The combination of Ian Searles (Wareham), Matt Beatty (Old Rochester), Hadley Stone (Taft) and Zack Kirby (Old Rochester/Framingham State) allowed only two earned runs on the night.

Hanover 8 Post #220 6, (16-6)Toend the regular season, Post #220 couldn’t overcome a four run deficit in theirlast at bat. Sean Griffith (Bourne) was a home run away from hitting for the cycle, while Billy Peterson(Wareham) went 3-for-5 w/ two runs scored. Jimmy Gamache (Tabor) and Tyler Horton (Wareham) each collected two hits. Ian Gray (Old Rochester) allowed only four earned runs, while striking out four batters in four innings of work.

 

FIRST-ROUND PLAYOFF SERIES

Game 1 – As the second seed in the 2012 District 10 Zone playoffs, Post #220 escaped w/ a 6-5 win against the #7 seed from Rockland in the first game of a best of three playoff series. Matt Beatty (Old Rochester) picked up the win by allowing eight hits and four earned runs. Beatty struck out nine in a complete game effort. Billy Peterson (Wareham) went 2-for-3 w/ a triple and two RBI’s. Sean Griffith (Bourne) also picked up two RBI’s w/ a base hit in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sean Conway (Wareham) added an RBI triple, and Tyler Horton(Wareham) went 1-for-2 w/ a walk.

Game 2 – In the second game of the series, Rockland wins w/ a walk off hit in the bottom of the seventh inning. In the 2-1 loss, Post #220 could only generate three hits on the night. Sean Griffith (Bourne) went 1-for-3 w/ the only RBI, while Jimmy Gamache (Tabor) and Ryan Steek (Upper Cape) added the other two hits. Ian Searles (Wareham)pitched an outstanding game by allowing only one earned run and striking out twelve along the way.

Game 3 – Due to a field conflict, Post #220 had to play the deciding game in Rockland as the home team and a late game comeback fell just short in a 5-4 loss. Zack Kirby (Old Rochester/Framingham State) allowed only two earned runs, while Rockland capitalized on Post #220’s defensive mistakes as they took a five run lead into the sixth inning. In the bottom half of that frame, Post #220 was able to push four runs across, but ultimately went down 1-2-3 in in the bottom of the seventh inning. Tyler Horton (Wareham) went 2-for-3 w/ two RBI’s. Brett Labonte (Wareham) also had two hits and Sean Conway (Wareham) added an RBI double. Jimmy Gamache (Tabor), Wiley Knight (Tabor) and Billy Peterson(Wareham) each had a hit in what would be Post #220’s final game of the summer season.

Final Record (including playoff results) 17-8.
